Let the Celebration Begin!!!
June 2017
We're almost ready for the Quasquicentennial. The programs have been printed. The electricians have added 220 outlets to both parks for the food trucks. The lights for the mural are on the way. Everyone has purple & white flowers planted. The town is filling potholes on the parade route. The new banners are up. Schedules are made out. The entertainment has been booked, and the fireworks are ready to go. And we'll be taking all the souvenirs including t-shirts and crockery over to the Quasqui Headquarters soon... (the library). It would have been a lot harder for us to do without cellphones, texting, and the internet! I haven't a clue how they did it 25 years ago for the Centennial... and that was a huge success! My husband was our mayor and life was good.
I'm sure you all have heard of a Sesquicentennial which is a 150th anniversary, and a lot of us remember the nation's Bicentennial which was 200 years, but do you have any idea what a 175th anniversary is called??? Well, as someone who used to read the dictionary, for fun, as a child, I will tell you! There are actually TWO names for the 175th anniversary... Demisemiseptcentennial or Quartoseptcentennial. And that will be 50 years from now so you'd better practice saying it!
But in the meantime, we here in Buffalo Center, Iowa, are about to celebrate our Quasquicentennial which is 125 years as a town. It takes a certain amount of spunk and civic pride for a town to last that long. We hope that Buffalo Center will be here for many years to come and that you all will enjoy what we have in store for you! Enjoy!!!
